Altenew Hibiscus Thank You card, and a GIVEAWAY!

Hello friends and welcome!  Today I am sharing a card I made using the new Build-A-Flower: Hibiscus stamp & die set from Altenew.  BAF Hibiscus square

Be sure to stop by the Altenew blogs for more inspiration, and leave a comment on the card blog and/or scrapbook blog for a chance to win one of six $30 gift certificates.  Also, leave a comment on THIS blog post for a chance to win a $20 gift certificate.  I will be announcing the winner on my blog on April 6, 2018.

My husband & I went on our honeymoon in Hawaii almost 14 years ago, and I fell in love with hibiscus flowers!  I have bought several hibiscus plants over the years, but I can’t seem to keep them alive.  I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.  Let me know if you have suggestions in the comments  below!

I was super excited to get this set, and here is what I created:

I wanted to make the hibiscus flowers a sunshine yellow color.  I used all the layers of the big hibiscus flower, except the 2 pistil images as I wanted to leave them white.  I made the leaves a lush vibrant green.  I don’t have a vary big collection of colored inks, so I used what I had in my stash.  On some layers, I simply used the same color again, just inked and stamped it twice to deepen the color.  I love how it turned out!

On a background panel, I stamped two of the sentiments included on the stamp set.  I also splattered the panel with gold spray ink.  After die cutting the florals, I popped it onto the background with foam tape.  (On one of the flowers I doubled up on the foam tape.)  I wanted to add a little more black, so I used a pen and drew black dots.

I absolutely love this build-a-flower Hibiscus set!  This set comes with 24 buildable images and 3 dies.  Here’s what Altenew says about this set:

Hibiscus are native to warm climates and are associated with tropical weather and relaxing summer days.  Hibiscus flowers have symbolized many things throughout history, but are now most commonly known to represent “delicate beauty.”  This set comprises of a 6 layer hibiscus flower in full bloom, a 6 layer hibiscus bud with stem, and a 4 layer leaf image. Three sentiments are also included. These floral images work well on cards, layouts, home decor, gift wrapping, and more. We can’t wait to see where these beautiful tropical flowers take your imagination!

This set cannot be purchased individually; it is sold as a set only.  You can purchase a Build-A-Flower: Hibiscus & Ink Bundle to save 5%.  Love those colors!

That’s it for me.  I hope you are inspired to get crafty!

Happy Sunday!  (Happy Easter!)

  1. Beautiful card! I especially like that you incorporated the buds, and you achieved the gradation of colour even without a big stash of coloured inks.
As for keeping the hibiscus alive….all I know is that they love at least 4-6 hrs. of direct sun per day.
Keep them moist, and remove the flowers as soon as they’re finished blooming. That seems to encourage more blossoms. Good luck with them!

  3. GORGEOUS card!
LOVE the colours of your inky layered flowers and leaves!
PS – our hibiscus is covered in red/pink flowers at the moment. All I can suggest is to try keeping the soil fairly dry and having them in a warm sunny spot, ours is against a brick wall – good luck 🙂

I wish I could advise you on what to do differently but I know nothing about Hibiscus excepts that they are gorgeous! Good luck.

  5. There is nothing like a memory to make a flower so special. Your card is stunning with the colour combo you choice and the splatter. I can never get my splatter to look that good! Your card makes me long for warmer weather, and less snow. It is such a happy and bright card.

  6. Beautiful card. Love the orange. We have these all over our yard here in yellow and orange. Can’t help with keeping them alive. We leave them alone and the just keep producing. They are in a lot of sun and in dry soil, if that helps.

  7. I wish I had some tips on keeping plants alive, but my only word of advice is keep them away from me! I love your choice of yellows for the hibiscus and how you left that center stamen white. It’s so bright and pretty. Thanks for sharing this lovely card with us!
